Nafa-khum or Nafakhum is a waterfall in Bangladesh on the River Sangu. It is the largest waterfall in Bangladesh by volume of water falling. The word “Khum” in Marma language means “Waterfall”. “Nating”, a special type of flying fish is found here at the bottom in small caves which swim against the stream but unable to jump over the height of the fall. The wild hilly Sangu River suddenly falls down here around 25–30 feet.
The Nafakhum waterfall is positioned in a remote area which takes three hours' walking distance from Remakri, Thanchi Upazila of Bandarban District. Nafa-khum is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Bangladesh.
How to go
Travel from Dhaka to Bandarban: As Dhaka and Bandarban are linked by road, there are several bus services available from Dhaka to reach Bandarban. It takes around 6 hours from Dhaka to Bandarban. There are a few services available which are Dolphin at Kalabagan, Shyamoli Paribahan at Gabtali, Asad gate, Fakirerpul, Kamlapur, Saydabad, Unique service, and S Alam at Kamalapur. It is advisable to buy tickets in advance on the high tourist season. If you are at Chittagong, you can ride on the bus every half hour. Chittagong to Bandarban tour takes 2 hours and the most available bus service is Purbani at Bahaddarhaat.
Travel from Bandarban to Thanchi: After reaching Bandarban, you have to go to Thanchi by bus from Bandarban. The distance between Thanchi to Bandarban is about 79 km. To reach Amaikum waterfall, you can hire a private vehicle or make a trip from Bandarban to thanchi by public jeep which is locally known as “ChanderGari”.
Travel from Thanchi to Remakri: Before the tour of Remakri, you need to hire a tour guide. While you are hiring a tour guide, you must have to provide your basic information including contact details at the Army camp of Remakri, Bandarban. You’ll find a tour guide committee there and that tour guide committee will pick an experienced tour guide for you. During the journey, the tour guide will stay with you for 2 days to reach the particular tour spot until you come back to Remakri. The charge of the tour guide will 600/= Taka (BDT) for the first day and for 500/= Taka (BDT) will be charged for the second day that excludes his food and accommodation.
Also, you have to hire a Boat for the adventurous journey of Remakri from Thanchi. The estimated boat fare is around 4000-4500/= Taka for the two way journey. You need to bargain with the boatmen about the boat fare before starting the journey by boat as they can charge more if you will not settle the fare. The journey by boat will take around 4 hours from Thanchi to Remakri. The journey might be adventurous and tough. During the rainy season, the tides of the Sangu River are very heavy and sometimes dangerous while going through the place of “Boro Pathor”. But the landscapes of both sides of the Sangu River are impressive.
On the way of Nafakhum, Amiakhumk and Remakri you can also visit some other places, for instance, Cighongjiri at ThanchiSadar, BoroPathor, Naikkiong Lake, Tindu Bazar, Naikkiong waterfall.
You have to remember that there is not any residential or non- resident hotel, motel or restaurants in Nafakhum and Remakri. So that, you have to deal with your own food, drinks and other kinds of stuff from nearby local tribal communities, you must have to pay them for their goods and services which are not much expensive at all.
